C-MAPS!

EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF COASTAL ZONES USING REMOTE SENSING TO SUPPORT THOSE WHO WORK TO KEEP OUR SHORES BEAUTIFUL, CLEAN, AND HEALTHY.

The mission of C-MAPS is to use UAV generated maps and satellite imagery to push the boundaries of what teams working in the coastal zone can achieve from aquaculture, marine debris, and habitat monitoring to hazard assessments.

Bio

Hi! My name is Katie Taladay (...and that is my field assistant Piko). I’m a PhD graduate student/researcher in the Honolulu area, dedicated to exploring and studying the physical and biogeochemical processes underlying the natural world. I am infinitely curious, deeply in love with the coastal-marine realm, and love making maps! Need a map? A tutorial? A lesson for your K-12 or undergraduates? Get in touch! I would be delighted to collaborate with you.

Current Research Projects

Satellite imagery used to train ML model (nanonet) to detect seaweed farms.

MarineDebris.jpg

We have an enormous ecological tragedy on our hands with marine debris. UAVs and aerial photography can help us to efficiently assess where and how much marine debris is on a beach. ML algorithms are applied for detection and may help us to quantify the problem spatially and temporally.

Invasive Algae

How quickly do invasive algae return following removal? I am working to develop a method to map algae using UAV and underwater photography in Maunalua Bay with Malama Maunalua.
